For some one aspiring to become a professional photographer, what tips or advice could you give to get them started and inspired?
I think one of the biggest pieces of advice I could give an aspiring photographer is to find out what ignites your passion in this profession. There was something that triggered your heart to direct you toward photography. Find it. For example, one of the first real photos I ever took was of my youngest cousin. He was only about a year old and was so fascinated by a flower. |
I instantly picked up my camera and captured that moment. He was so curious and focused on something that seems so little. It made me realize how much I love candid, raw emotion. You can't pose that. After that moment I wanted to learn every bit of photography I could. I have a community of photographers I connect with almost daily, I am constantly on Youtube (among other sites) researching new techniques, and I shoot as much as I can.
Find someone that is comfortable in front of a camera and put your knowledge to work. Practice goes a long way.

How has photography changed your life? What are the advantages you see with it and what are some of the struggles you face being a photographer?
Photography has changed my life because I now find myself trying to admire the beauty in all things. In our society, there is a lot of focus on the more superficial types of beauty as opposed to the forms of beauty that set us apart and are unique.
can't see having the passion for photography that I do if everyone looked the same. Finding the unique side of those I photograph pushes me to be creative. I observe what angles, poses, movements, etc. work to accentuate their beauty and go from there.
Sometimes it can be a struggle if someone is nervous in front of the camera (guilty of this myself), but once they break out of that shell it's amazing the difference you can see when you're going through their photos after the session.

Has Delaware had any impact on your career? What are the benefits that come with being located in Delaware?
Delaware has reignited my passion for this industry. I am so blessed to get to work with the people I do and the opportunities it has given me. I've been able to work with individuals, families, local businesses, entrepreneurs, the list goes on.
Being based in Bethany Beach, the majority of photography I do is with families coming in town for the week/weekend. It's so much fun to be able to work with people from all over the country and hear their stories. Even though our time together may be brief, it has an impact on my life.
