Kai Deans (Wilmington, DE)
What got you into Photography? When did you start?
Well initially I wasn’t really interested in photography, I thought nothing of it. I have an older sister whom I look up to back when I was in high school, she picked it up as a hobby. After awhile she started showing me how to use a camera and forced me to take photos at family reunions. Soon enough I began to like it, and went on into college just renting out a camera until I could afford my own. So to date, I started renting out that camera from the library back in February of 2016. What has been the most fulfilling thing about being a photographer?
The most fulfilling thing has to be the ideology of creating an image from scratch and calling it your own. I often take a step back from a shoot I did and say “wow I shot that”. It feels great to have a piece of art with my name attached to it. The second most rewarding thing is how people perceive the image. I love to hear how my work influences others, especially emotionally. Not only that but if it was a shoot for someone, let's say a wedding, I am more than happy to have helped capturing those special moments. |
What has been the most difficult part of being a photographer?
The most difficult part… there's so many. Sometimes people don’t like the photos you took of them and it may be discouraging. Other times you may not get the feedback you were looking for or the recognition you deserve. Lastly some people may not consider it a real job and expect free photos or at a cheaper rate. Nonetheless you have to just block the noise and keep on pushing through. You have many different types of photographs on your website and instagram. But what type of photography is your favorite and why?
This is a hard one. I honestly don’t know. I just like to shoot what catches my eye. With a studio shoot I am able to control the environment and plan out how I want the photo to go. Although when I’m out in the streets sometimes a building that looks interesting is what will give me creative drive for the day. Who knows, sometimes I like to shoot sneakers and cars. I just like creating dope images thats all. |
I saw on your instagram that you are involved in other things besides photography. What are those different things?
I dabble in videography from time to time. I like the idea of telling a story through moving pictures. Visuals are everything. Other than that I recently started a business with my friend Tomiwa called “The Good Guys”. Essentially we throw brunches, day parties, special events and more. We have a couple things coming in 2020 so be sure to follow @thegoodguys.llc via instagram.

What are your goals for 2020 with your photography or the other ventures you have in life?
I just pray to get some major recognition with my work in the future. I know I have to work hard and it looks like it's already paying off! I wouldn’t be asked to do this interview otherwise. Nonetheless I just really want to continue and grow in this craft. Learn more and do more!

If you could “shoot your shot” and do a photoshoot with anybody who would it be and where?
Honestly there’s so many people I would love to shoot with. I think I’d like to shoot with Pharell. He seems like a pretty dope guy and someone who wouldn’t forget me so easily. He would probably open up some doors for me too.
