Today I chose to listen to the new album Virtue from The Voidz, released under RCA Records. This album was an upbeat alternative rock record that I enjoyed thoroughly. The sound design was quite impressive and different for something in this genre, and the sounds used in songs like QYURRYUS were incredibly unique, but worked very well to create an enjoyable song. In a similar vein, I loved the drums in All Wordz Are Made Up. They were far from traditional and added to the unique song full of vocoded vocals and spacey synths. It was interesting to see Julian Casablancas lend his vocals to such a project, but it fits well in the overall sound of the album. The songs explore an array of genres, with some having an electronic sound, some more dream-pop sounding, while others are reminiscent of heavy rock. I was particularly fond of the heavier songs, including Pyramid of Bones, and One of the Ones, as they were the most energetic songs on the album. My complaints would mostly lie in the vocal mixing of a few tracks. In songs like Leave It In My Dreams, the vocals are drowned out, while in songs like QYURRYUS, the jarring autotuned vocals are far too prominent almost to the point of being annoying.

Author: Frank McLaughlinOutside of the working world, music is something I invest a lot of time in, in more ways than one. I could spend hours on my SoundCloud timeline, Apple Music, or YouTube discovering new artists to listen to and enjoy. I have channeled this love into brief music reviews that can be found in the appropriate part of this website. I have also begun to produce music myself, learning the ins and outs of Ableton, Serum, Audacity, and other software, and it still remains one of my favorite ways to spend my free time. It has sparked a love for learning new technologies and software and that is something I hope to continue to grow with. I feel that my lifelong interest in the technical side of creative arts combined with my newfound love for analytics combine perfectly and serve me well in the marketing and advertising realm. |
