Today I was introduced to Sunflower Bean’s new album, Twentytwo in Blue, that was released under Mom + Pop Records. Listening to this album was, to me, like listening to the unreleased recordings of a non-existent Fleetwood Mac album. The lead singer has a voice reminiscent of Stevie Nicks, with a male backup vocalist whose interjections sound incredibly similar to the lofi vocals found in many Gorillaz tracks. Oddly enough this combination works, and this album is fantastic. For starters, it is one of the best sounding albums I have heard in a long time from a mixing perspective. In songs like “I Was a Foolâ€, when both vocalists are singing and countless instruments play in the background, there is never a moment where any aspect of the song is muddled or drowned out. Each and every instrument is just as clear as any other, and it sounds incredible. Similarly, the vocals in general on this album work together so well. The backup vocables used in songs like “Crisis Fest†and “Memoria†add such a harmonious layer to the song and really put it over the top, making it one of my favorite songs on the album. The only negative I have with this album is that I wasn’t a huge fan of the verses where the male vocalist was the focus. He was great as a backup vocalist but had an incredibly boring voice that could not match his female counterpart and thus, in my opinion, he takes away from the song.
