slenderbodies: Live at The Foundry

On October 13th, slenderbodies played the Foundry in Philly with opening band Hazey Eyes. They are no strangers to Philadelphia, having played The Radio 104.5 Birthday Celebration in 2018, and the Fillmore that same year, supporting Passion Pit. The California based indie pop duo consists of two members, Max Vehuni and Benji Cormack. They are joined on stage by touring drummer Will; on stage they announced this is his first tour. For their first headlining show in Philly, the Foundry seems to be the perfect venue. Their live light production spills off the back of the stage and fills the entire room.
It is an intimate yet sold out setting for a band that would surely thrive on the stage at any music festival. During their set, slenderbodies played about seven tracks off their latest album, komorebi. Tracks such as “Belong” and “Senses” were stand out moments of the night. The room seemed caught by the contagious vibes of their blend of bass heavy dance music and alternative pop. No one seemed able to help but sing along and dance.

They also played my personal favorite off their new album “arrival” which features a verse with an undeniable Weeknd flavor. The middle of their set was broken up with a cover of “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” by Panic! At The Disco. A choice clearly made given Benji admitting to be an emo kid. It would be great to see a digital version of this similar to their cover of “Toxic” by Britney Spears. The set overall was a great mix of their entire body of work. They played several tracks of their EP “soraya” which was also released in 2019. For an encore they came out with “anemone” which currently has close to 30 million listens on Spotify. After the show Benji and Max waited at the back of the room to meet with all the fans who came to see them. slenderbodies have been going nonstop between touring and releasing music on a consistent basis that keeps listeners satisfied even in the digital age. They also just announced that they will be playing the Okeechobee Festival in Sunshine Grove Florida in March. I hope to see their names on many more festival lineups in the future. They would surely receive a warm welcome at Delaware's own Firefly Festival. Be sure to check out their latest and in my opinion, best work to date komorebi !
