Today I listened to Logic's new album/"mixtape", Bobby Tarantino II. Seeing as he chose to call this project a "mixtape", rather than an album, I find it fitting to review it as such. It is clear he used this as a platform to demonstrate his ability to cross into different genres underneath the rap umbrella. I was impressed with how easy it was for Logic to emulate the sounds and styles of countless popular rap artists in the industry. Each song sounds vaguely similar in many aspects to songs a listener would expect from artists like Travis Scott, or others dominating the scene. This album seemed to poke fun at the what's popular in the industry and did a great job showing how easy and effortless it is to create some of the music that is popular today, and it sounded good in the process. That being said, my problem with this album lies in its lack of originality. While I did enjoy the overall sound of the album, it all felt a bit contrived, and with the exception of the song Indica Badu, I would have loved to see more of Logic's original, soulful, sound shine through, and not just what he thought people would want to hear.

Author: Frank McLaughlinOutside of the working world, music is something I invest a lot of time in, in more ways than one. I could spend hours on my SoundCloud timeline, Apple Music, or YouTube discovering new artists to listen to and enjoy. I have channeled this love into brief music reviews that can be found in the appropriate part of this website. I have also begun to produce music myself, learning the ins and outs of Ableton, Serum, Audacity, and other software, and it still remains one of my favorite ways to spend my free time. It has sparked a love for learning new technologies and software and that is something I hope to continue to grow with. I feel that my lifelong interest in the technical side of creative arts combined with my newfound love for analytics combine perfectly and serve me well in the marketing and advertising realm. |
