Today I happened across JPEGMAFIA's new album, Veteran released under Deathbomb Arc Records. This album is the posterchild for experimental rap and is absolutely one of the most unique and inventive hip-hop albums I have heard in a long time. He effortlessly combines the bouncy flows of rappers like Childish Gambino, but over Death Grips-esque beats the world of hip-hop have never seen before. I can honestly say I have never heard beats like this in my life and that is what makes this album so appealing. The sheer inventiveness of the production is endearing and refreshing and at times exciting. It's not hard to imagine jumping around at a live show to almost every song on this record, making it so much fun to listen to; he does a great job of creating incredibly exciting music. Specifically, the mixing and mastering of the 808s and drums on this album is so clean and does not distort or take away from the songs, like many seem to do in popular mainstream rap. The only downside to having such an experimental album is that at times, some of the sounds used are a bit dissonant and hard to listen to. The sample on the track "Real Nega" is so odd and unsettling, I would feel uncomfortable playing that song out loud. In addition, some of the samples used in "Baby I'm Bleeding", (one of my favorite songs on the album) are so much louder than the rest of the song, specifically the gunshot samples, which is jarring and takes you by surprise.

Author: Frank McLaughlinOutside of the working world, music is something I invest a lot of time in, in more ways than one. I could spend hours on my SoundCloud timeline, Apple Music, or YouTube discovering new artists to listen to and enjoy. I have channeled this love into brief music reviews that can be found in the appropriate part of this website. I have also begun to produce music myself, learning the ins and outs of Ableton, Serum, Audacity, and other software, and it still remains one of my favorite ways to spend my free time. It has sparked a love for learning new technologies and software and that is something I hope to continue to grow with. I feel that my lifelong interest in the technical side of creative arts combined with my newfound love for analytics combine perfectly and serve me well in the marketing and advertising realm. |
