I chose to listen to Fever, the new record from rapper Black Milk, released under Mass Appeal Records. This album was an incredibly soulful, colorful, and overall very different for a hip-hop album. For starters, the production was insanely well-done. It was incredibly diverse, with thunderous tribal drums in one song, and airy, light synths in another. Every beat was undeniably unique, and didn't fall into the the trap many rappers fall into, using boring beats with nothing more than 808s, kicks, snares and hi-hats. Black Milk is also a fairly talented lyricist. His though-provoking bars kept me interested throughout the entire album. My only complaint would be 2 songs in particular where his flow does not match up well to the beat. In, "But I Can Be" and "2 Would Try" he seems to be rapping in a sort of break-beat flow/style and it doesn't work extremely well. There are several moments in this album where his flow doesn't fit well, and I'm not sure if it's intentional, a sort of stylistic choice, or just a simple oversight. There was also a trumpet sample in "2 Would Try" that is a bit dissonant and doesn't sound as good as I'd imagine the producer intended it too. This album was not anything too special, and I would most likely not listen to it again.

Outside of the working world, music is something I invest a lot of time in, in more ways than one. I could spend hours on my SoundCloud timeline, Apple Music, or YouTube discovering new artists to listen to and enjoy. I have channeled this love into brief music reviews that can be found in the appropriate part of this website. I have also begun to produce music myself, learning the ins and outs of Ableton, Serum, Audacity, and other software, and it still remains one of my favorite ways to spend my free time. It has sparked a love for learning new technologies and software and that is something I hope to continue to grow with. I feel that my lifelong interest in the technical side of creative arts combined with my newfound love for analytics combine perfectly and serve me well in the marketing and advertising realm. Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview. |
