Who has influenced your art the most? There are so many amazing artist that I admire who are putting out beautiful work currently. With a plethora to choice from, I have always been inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci and his true versatility and ingenuity within his work. On the tattoo end of artist, Nikki Hurtado has been a complete pioneer of pushing boundaries on skin. Both artists influence me to constantly better my craft and continue to focus on fine details that may be overlooked by many. |
What are some of your hobbies and do they influence your work? I started doing art when I took a basics class in high school. There I gained my love of drawing and painting, which I eventually expanded into my tattooing career. I still love being able to sit down to paint and create artwork just for myself. It is hard to find the time now, as I am almost always drawing for my tattoo career, but painting has been the one solid hobby I have carried throughout my life. I love being able to take my personal painting style and incorporating it within my tattooing and trying new styles on canvas. Along with canvas painting, I also paint horror figurines and creatures. It’s one more way I get to test my creative thinking and transform old trinkets that are unloved into a new and unique one of a kind piece. |
What are your favorite subjects to tattoo?
I enjoy tattooing so many different subjects and styles. Currently, I love experimenting with color realism and bringing my college portrait studies into my work. I try to remain a well rounded artist and I love designing everything from horror to dainty feminine tattoos. The industry is constantly changing, along with what is popular and in demand, so focusing on specific subjects becomes difficult.
How do you approach custom design pieces?
Typically, I like to start by sitting down with my clients and gain an understanding of their personality in order to incorporate a personalized feeling within my design. I always have clients bring multiple references (anything from tattoos, paintings, photographs etc.) to grab a sense of their style preferences as we sit down and just talk through ideas. Any and every idea my client is kicking around, I want to hear. After we have talked in depth about all elements being incorporated, I blast some music and just draw. I spend multiple hours per piece and normally scratch a few designs before I find the one that clicks. So much time and love goes into every piece I do and I approach the process as if I am designing for a family member. Every single line has to be perfect, flow well and contour to the body part it is becoming apart of. If the design isn’t one I would be proud of wearing myself, it gets scrapped and I head back to the drawing boards. |
